A sham is not a pillowcase

The word confuses people, and it is a genuine distinction rather than a marketing one.

A pillowcase is functional. You sleep on it, it is usually plain cotton, and it has an open end or a flap so a pillow slides in and out easily.

A sham is decorative. It goes over a pillow or a pad that stays made up on the bed, it is not meant to be slept on, and it is chosen to look right rather than to feel right against a face.

The name is honest about itself: a sham is a pretend pillow, there to complete the look of a bed and to be taken off before anyone gets in.

That is exactly what a printed polyester cover is for. It is the wrong fabric to sleep on and the right one to look at.

How they are used

On a made bed, shams sit in front of the sleeping pillows, propped against the headboard. They come off at night and go back on in the morning.
