Curly taupe fur runs from his ears down to broad flat paws, and over it sits a shaggy white fleece worn like a borrowed coat. Part of the costume, a cream ear lined in pink, falls back across one shoulder.
The joke is that the disguise is meant to be seen through. A wide black nose, dark bead eyes and fine pale whiskers show clearly against the wool. He stands upright with his toes stitched in and his front paws held a little out from his sides, caught mid explanation.
The idea belongs to Aesop, the Greek storyteller credited with the fables, and it reached English through the Gospel of Matthew, where false prophets are described as arriving in sheep's clothing. In the fable the trick works well enough on the flock, until the shepherd picks a sheep for supper and the wolf's plan ends there. Every retelling since keeps the same lesson. A costume covers the coat, never the appetite.
Three heights mean he can be a pocket companion or a proper armful, and the same expression comes with all of them.
