Watercolour is a loose medium and this artist has let it run. The brown wolf on these socks dissolves into drips below the jaw, as though the paint were still wet, while above that the head is drawn tight: a pale mask around the eyes, a black nose, amber irises looking straight out at you.
A pale wash on a pale sock could easily lose itself once the fabric curves round the foot. It stays legible here because the picture rests on a small number of firm shapes. Two triangular ears, the dark wedge of the nose, the shadow running down each cheek. Those read at a glance from a metre away, which is the only distance a sock is ever seen from.
The cloud coloured background, grey with a blush of rose in it, gives the head something to sit against without competing for attention. The drips underneath add movement to an otherwise still portrait.
