Teal does all the work in this scene. A grey and black wolf stands on a low rock inside a wood of bare tangled branches, head thrown right back, and a white moon burns through the twigs behind it. The colour runs from near white at the moon out through cyan and petrol blue to a black edge that closes the frame.
Forests are hard on sound. Trunks scatter it, leaf litter soaks it up, and the high frequencies die first. A wolf howl is built the other way round: long, low and held close to one note for several seconds, which is precisely the kind of signal that survives trees. The figures usually quoted are around ten miles across open tundra and roughly six through woodland like this.
The bare branches drawn here make the wood friendlier still to a call, since there are no leaves left to absorb it. Winter is the loud season, and a January chorus reaches ears that a July one never would.
The dark outer edge behaves like a vignette, holding the eye on the lit centre where the moon and the raised muzzle sit. Against a warm wood floor the blues stay cool and keep their depth.
