Moonlight does the framing here. A pale crescent sits low behind the wolf's head and its glow catches the edge of the ruff, so the animal separates cleanly from the storm cloud gathering above and the deep blue beyond. A few small stars are scattered towards the toe.
Backlighting is one of the few painterly tricks that survives being knitted. It works by outline rather than by interior detail, and an outline is precisely what a looped surface can hold on to. The green eyes are the second anchor, two small bright points that stay readable even when the fabric folds.
Everything else is allowed to stay dark. Against navy the wolf reads as mass and shape first, which is why it still looks like a wolf from across a room rather than a shift in the blue.
