Watercolour tattooing appeared in the 2010s and became popular fast: soft washes of colour, splashes and bleeds, and crucially no heavy black outline.
That missing outline is the whole look, and it is also the problem. Black line is what holds a permanent tattoo together as the ink spreads under the skin over the years. Without it, a watercolour piece has nothing structural, and the soft edges that make it beautiful are exactly what blurs first.
Tattooists have argued about this for a decade. The honest summary is that watercolour work photographs superbly on day one and is among the least predictable styles at twenty years.
No ageing problem, because it is gone in a week. You get the style at its best and none of the compromise.
It is a genuinely good argument for temporary tattoos generally: some designs are simply better as something you wear for a while.

Soft-edged designs are forgiving to apply, since a lifting edge is far less obvious than on a hard-outlined piece.
