A pack crossing deep snow travels in single file, each animal placing its feet in the tracks of the one ahead. Only the leader breaks trail, and that job rotates.

It has one strange consequence. A pack of eight can leave a trail that looks like a single animal passed, which fooled trackers for a very long time and still catches people out.
The scene is a pack spread across a frozen shoreline under moonlight rather than a group arranged for a portrait. One animal works along the near bank, others stand out on the open snow, and more wait on the rise above the water, so the eye moves between them instead of settling in one place.
It suits a wide wall, and it wants room on either side. Pushed into a corner, the sweep of snow and dark water behind the animals stops reading.
