A pack, not a lone wolfAlmost every wolf image sold is a single animal. This one shows three, and that changes the subject entirely.A lone wolf reads as independence. A group reads as family, which is what a wolf pack actually is: a breeding...

A pair, not a lone wolfAlmost all wolf art sells the solitary animal. This shows two, and it reads completely differently. The fact underneath it is real: wolf pairs commonly stay together for life, and a wild pack is a breeding pair with their offspring...

Autumn red rather than snowMost wolf landscapes are winter scenes. This one is not, and the difference is more useful than it sounds. The wolf sits low in a bank of crimson autumn scrub with rust bracken behind it, head turned towards you and both...

Red in a black and white imageThe colour choice is doing everything here, and it is not arbitrary. The picture is greyscale apart from the eyes, so red is the only colour anywhere in the frame. It is the reason warning signs, emergency equipment and...

The eyes are the pieceA wolf's face out of a dark blue winter wood, and everything about this image rests on that one detail. The picture is worked almost entirely in deep blue and near black, with snow falling through bare branches, so the...

The image everybody knowsTwo wolves in profile beneath a full moon is about the most reproduced arrangement in wolf art, and there is a reason for that. A bright disc at one end of the picture and a pair of hard-edged heads at the...

Restrained rather than dramaticThree wolves in a drift of pale mist, one with its head thrown back mid howl and the other two standing quiet beside it, rendered soberly, without the heavy contrast and saturated night sky that usually accompanies the subject. That restraint is...

Fog does the workThe wolf is emerging from mist rather than standing sharp against a background, and that softness is the whole character of the piece.Soft-edged images are considerably easier to place than hard-edged ones. There is no strong outline to clash with the...

The forest is half the pictureTwo wolves among the pines, with the woodland given as much weight as the animals. That balance is unusual: most wildlife art treats the background as a backdrop. Here the trees carry structure and vertical rhythm, and the wolves sit...

Night sky and a snow ledgeA white wolf stood on a snow-covered rock, head turned, tail streaming out behind it. Behind it an open starfield and a very large crescent moon, and at its throat a beaded band with an ornament hanging from it.The...

Cropped to the eyesNo landscape, no body, no context. Just the eyes at close range, split across five panels with one eye either side of the muzzle, which is about as concentrated as an image gets.Tight crops work because they remove the choice of...

Play, not conflictTwo wolves messing about on snow. It is a rare subject in wolf art, which runs heavily toward menace, and that alone makes it worth having. It is also accurate. Adult wolves play throughout their lives, not just as pups, with bows and...

What this is, honestlyA white wolf beside a Native American woman, painted in a romantic style rather than a documentary one.It is worth being clear about that. The image belongs to a long tradition of European and American artists imagining Indigenous life rather than...

Head on is the hardest look to ignoreThe wolf is turned to face you, ears back, muzzle wrinkled and the teeth showing, with snow falling through a cold blue-grey dark behind it. Nothing subtle survives in the same room as that. The pale grey and...

The wolf that was never driven outEvery other wolf in this collection has a history of persecution behind it. The Arctic wolf largely does not, for the plain reason that almost nobody lives in its range. It is one of the few large predators on...
