A turnskin in a black circle Old English built the word from two pieces: wer, meaning man, and wulf. The Romans had their own name for the same idea, versipellis, the turnskin, and it says something plainer than any later version: a creature that...

Tartan, claws and fur cuffs Three red claw marks are torn across the front of the black top, and the rest of the costume answers them. The red tartan skirt is cut into uneven points at the hem with loose threads left hanging, and...

The breath is the detailSteam rising from the animal's mouth is what makes this image cold. Without it you have a wolf and some snow; with it the temperature becomes a fact rather than a suggestion.Small details carry more weight than the big ones...

A grey wolf fills the printed centre panel, its body turned side on and its head swung square to the viewer, painted against a pale sage ground where bare trees and the faint shapes of other wolves show through like breath on glass.Black hoop,...

A pair, not a lone wolfAlmost all wolf art sells the solitary animal. This shows two, and it reads completely differently. The fact underneath it is real: wolf pairs commonly stay together for life, and a wild pack is a breeding pair with their offspring...

Autumn red rather than snowMost wolf landscapes are winter scenes. This one is not, and the difference is more useful than it sounds. The wolf sits low in a bank of crimson autumn scrub with rust bracken behind it, head turned towards you and both...

The image everybody knowsTwo wolves in profile beneath a full moon is about the most reproduced arrangement in wolf art, and there is a reason for that. A bright disc at one end of the picture and a pair of hard-edged heads at the...

Night sky and a snow ledgeA white wolf stood on a snow-covered rock, head turned, tail streaming out behind it. Behind it an open starfield and a very large crescent moon, and at its throat a beaded band with an ornament hanging from it.The...

Cropped to the eyesNo landscape, no body, no context. Just the eyes at close range, split across five panels with one eye either side of the muzzle, which is about as concentrated as an image gets.Tight crops work because they remove the choice of...

Head on is the hardest look to ignoreThe wolf is turned to face you, ears back, muzzle wrinkled and the teeth showing, with snow falling through a cold blue-grey dark behind it. Nothing subtle survives in the same room as that. The pale grey and...

Night rather than confrontationThe wolf stands square in the snow, front on and looking straight out, with a moon over the pines on one side of it and a single bright star on the other. It holds your eye steadily rather than threatening you,...

Every hair on this wolf's face has been painted in, from the pale ruff along the cheeks to the darker mask sitting between the eyes. The colours are honest ones, warm brown and tan over charcoal and cream, with amber eyes, a pale muzzle...

Backlight does the work in this one. The wolf's head is nearly pure black and fills the whole front, while every hair along the ears and ruff catches a cold blue edge thrown from the forest behind. Two green eyes hold the centre. Faint...

Firelight on a lowered head Side on, head dropped, mouth open with the teeth showing. The wolf is drawn in hard black and white, from the dark line down the muzzle to the heavy pale ruff banked around the neck and shoulders, and it...

The infinity loopAn infinity symbol alongside the wolf head, which is an unusual pairing and does something specific: it softens the animal considerably. Both are worked in silver against layered black leather, with chunky braided plaits round the outside and thin plain cords running between...
