A large ginger pompom crowns this ribbed grey hat, its long fibres splaying out wider than the crown it is fixed to, with darker tips scattered through them. On the turned-up cuff sits a small square patch, embroidered with a wolf looking straight ahead,...

Skoll and Hati run through Norse myth as a pair of wolves in permanent pursuit, one behind the sun and one behind the moon. The old poems treat that chase as the engine of the sky. Time moves because something is running. The face...

Engraved rather than sculptedThe wolf here is cut into the metal rather than raised out of it, and it is small: a single head on the polished strip that runs down the centre of the band, between two dark inset panels with a fine...

Why gold and silver and nothing elseEvery culture that had access to metals arrived at the same two for ornament. That is not fashion agreeing across the whole world by coincidence. It is chemistry. Almost every metal reacts with air and moisture and destroys itself:...

Interlace is the oldest trick in Celtic ornament: one ribbon crossing over and under itself until the eye gives up looking for the end of it. The wolf on this oval plaque is drawn the same way, its ear, muzzle and ruff built from...

Two animals on one bandA wolf and a dragon share a single round medallion face, the dragon in flight across the top and the wolf standing in profile beneath it, which is a considerably harder thing to execute than a single head. Two creatures...

The ruff around the shouldersWolves carry their longest hair around the neck and shoulders, a ruff they can raise when they want to look larger. It is why a wolf in full winter coat reads as broad and heavy through the chest and light...

One front paw is raised in a half wave, held up while the other three limbs hang long and loose. It is the posture of a young wolf still growing into its legs, and it gives this plush its whole character. The colouring follows...

Dark all the way throughSubject and palette agreeing with each other, which is not true of every design in this range. A wolf sitting back on its haunches and howling, worked in greys and silver white against a night sky, with a full moon...

Guardian of the mountain shrines Okami is the Japanese word for wolf, and in the mountain shrines of Chichibu and Mitake the wolf was honoured rather than hunted. Farmers asked it to keep deer and boar out of the fields, and took paper charms...

Red mask on a black dial A marker at twelve shaped differently from all the others is one of the oldest tricks in watch design. The eye finds the top of the dial before it reads anything, and the rest falls into place from...

Howls really do carry further at nightThis is usually put down to quiet, and quiet is only part of it. The air itself behaves differently after dark.During the day the ground is warm and the air above it is warmer than the air higher...

The trials were realThe werewolf is usually filed with vampires and other invented monsters, which misses something uncomfortable: people were prosecuted for it.Across France, Germany and Switzerland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, werewolf trials ran alongside the witch trials, using the same procedures...

Why indigo fades where you moveIndigo sits on the outside of the cotton fibre rather than sinking into it, layer over layer. That is why denim lightens first at the elbows, the cuffs and the front of the shoulders, and why two jackets from...
