Direwolves were real animals. Aenocyon dirus ranged across the Americas until roughly thirteen thousand years ago, heavier in the jaw than a grey wolf and built for larger prey. Fiction borrowed the name. This cover borrows the snarl. The face of the cover The...

Egyptian rather than NorseMost wolf jewelry draws on Norse or Native American imagery. This one goes to Egypt instead, which gives it a completely different visual language: clean geometry, strong profile, no knotwork. The head is shown side on with the ears up and...

Where Norse mythology actually comes fromWorth knowing before wearing it, and it makes the whole thing more interesting rather than less. The Vikings left very little writing. What we have is mostly Icelandic, mostly from the thirteenth century, and much of it was assembled by...

Prince Albert gave his name to the watch chain, and the habit he set was straightforward: a bar through the waistcoat buttonhole, the watch in the pocket, the links running free across the front. This bronze toned gousset is made for that kind of...

Sunrise does most of the work in this design. A cream coloured wolf sits with its back to you on a low rock, tail curled at its side, watching the light break between a range of misty peaks. The whole cloth is washed in...

A large ginger pompom crowns this ribbed grey hat, its long fibres splaying out wider than the crown it is fixed to, with darker tips scattered through them. On the turned-up cuff sits a small square patch, embroidered with a wolf looking straight ahead,...

Skoll and Hati run through Norse myth as a pair of wolves in permanent pursuit, one behind the sun and one behind the moon. The old poems treat that chase as the engine of the sky. Time moves because something is running. The face...

Why gold and silver and nothing elseEvery culture that had access to metals arrived at the same two for ornament. That is not fashion agreeing across the whole world by coincidence. It is chemistry. Almost every metal reacts with air and moisture and destroys itself:...

Interlace is the oldest trick in Celtic ornament: one ribbon crossing over and under itself until the eye gives up looking for the end of it. The wolf on this oval plaque is drawn the same way, its ear, muzzle and ruff built from...

A werewolf caught mid roar Jaws wide and teeth bared, the creature on this shirt fills the whole front and carries on across both sleeves. It is a single face, painted close enough that you can read the amber in the eyes and the...

Two animals on one bandA wolf and a dragon share a single round medallion face, the dragon in flight across the top and the wolf standing in profile beneath it, which is a considerably harder thing to execute than a single head. Two creatures...
