Scrollwork and three heads Three wolf heads rise from a field of engraved scrollwork on this oval buckle, one large and facing outward at the centre, two smaller ones in profile above and below it. The ground behind them is filled edge to edge...

The design that moves mostTribal linework rather than a photographic wolf, which is why this one works in rooms where a realistic print would be too much. A single wolf head, drawn head-on, fills almost the whole panel, patterned with dots and chevrons across...

Painted white scrollwork curls across this wolf's brow, a blue stone set in bronze sits above one eye, and a dreamcatcher hangs at the chest on a cord of teal feathers and brass beads. The portrait fills the whole cloth, close enough that the...

Four hunters, two ways of living Four faces sit inside one woven hoop on this throw: a lion, a grey wolf, a leopard and a tiger, each in its own quarter of the circle, with white and brown feathers, dark stone and strands of...

Ink, gold and a crescent moon A gold crescent moon sits high on this wolf's brow, drawn as though scratched into the dark with a fine pen. The head fills the whole blanket, front on and level, worked in deep teal and near black...

Two wolves tumble through a patch of grass, one rearing up with its jaws open, the other rolling beneath it with a paw lifted. The pair is painted in loose watercolour, brown and tan fur bleeding into flecks of orange and teal that scatter...

Four moons cross the lower half of this design, waxing from a slim crescent to a full gold disc, while a blue wolf looks straight out from above them. Behind its head a white sphere is drawn in fine geometric lines, and everything else...

Amber on one side, violet on the other The wolf's face is split down the muzzle by two light sources. The left half sits in warm amber and tawny gold, the right half falls away into deep violet shadow. Warm and cool sit opposite...

Drawn in ink on a cream ground Nearly all of this design is line. Pen strokes and stippled dots build the shading, and the broad cream ground is left open to carry the light. Illustrators call that reserved white: the untouched ground becomes the...

Everything rests on the eye In a realistic wolf portrait the whole likeness hangs on one small area. Wolves have amber to yellow irises ringed in dark, set forward for the binocular vision every hunter needs, and the pale mask around the muzzle pushes...

A wolf at the start of the Mongol lineBlue and wolves have been linked for a very long time. The Secret History of the Mongols opens with Borte Chono, the blue grey wolf, who crosses the water with his mate the fallow doe, and...

Where the black coat came from Black wolves owe their colour to a single gene variant at the K locus, and that variant did not begin with wolves. It came from domestic dogs, carried across the Bering land bridge by early people and passed...

Two layers, the way a wolf wears themA wolf's winter coat works in two parts: a dense woolly underfur that traps warm air against the skin, and longer guard hairs that shed snow and wind above it. The fabric here follows the same idea,...

Where Norse mythology actually comes fromWorth knowing before wearing it, and it makes the whole thing more interesting rather than less. The Vikings left very little writing. What we have is mostly Icelandic, mostly from the thirteenth century, and much of it was assembled by...

A wolf painted in violet and cyan The head sits in profile against a deep purple ground, built from loose brushstrokes of magenta, turquoise, orange and white that never quite settle into flat colour. One amber eye holds steady in the middle of it,...
