Hexagons, which is unusual hereEvery other painting in our range is rectangular. This one is not a single canvas at all: it is a cluster of hexagonal panels hung together as a honeycomb, with gaps between them, and it takes up about as much...

The eyes are the pieceA wolf's face out of a dark blue winter wood, and everything about this image rests on that one detail. The picture is worked almost entirely in deep blue and near black, with snow falling through bare branches, so the...

Restrained rather than dramaticThree wolves in a drift of pale mist, one with its head thrown back mid howl and the other two standing quiet beside it, rendered soberly, without the heavy contrast and saturated night sky that usually accompanies the subject. That restraint is...

The wolf that was never driven outEvery other wolf in this collection has a history of persecution behind it. The Arctic wolf largely does not, for the plain reason that almost nobody lives in its range. It is one of the few large predators on...

Let it choose the paletteA piece this loud is not going to fit into an existing scheme. It will decide one, and the useful move is to let it.Pick two colours out of the canvas and repeat them elsewhere in the room, in cushions,...

Colour, deliberatelyMost wolf art sits in greys, blues and whites. This one does not, and that is the reason to choose it.A wolf's head in profile, muzzle raised, painted across a wash of crimson, orange, pink and violet that behaves more like a nebula...

A wolf's head, jaws open, built from crossing contour lines. Look at the muzzle and you can follow the mesh bending over the bridge of the nose, tightening along the gum line, then spreading wide across the cheek and running up into the pricked...

Grey wolves wear two coats at once. Long guard hairs carry most of the colour and shed the weather, while a dense underlayer holds the heat in. That is why a wolf in winter looks frosted rather than evenly grey, and it is the...

Geometry over furA wolf photographed head on, lip lifted and teeth showing, with a rainbow edged triangle and a set of fine circles laid across the face. The photograph stays visible underneath, so the fur and the eyes read as real while the linework...

Howling is a choiceA wolf hearing a chorus can join it or not, and which it does is not random.Researchers working with captive packs found that when a wolf was taken away, the ones who howled most for it were the ones with the...

A track is a record of an absenceIt is usually sold as a symbol of moving forward, and there is something better in it than that.A footprint is the only common tattoo subject that is not a picture of a thing. It is a...

Forest is the real habitatWolf imagery runs overwhelmingly to open snow, and it gives a misleading picture of where the animal actually lives.Woodland is genuine wolf country. The European populations that returned over the last few decades came back through forest corridors rather than...

Fantasy, and openly soA girl's face fills the centre panel, pale and freckled beneath a beaded crown of feathers and roses, her cream and magenta hair spilling across a background of deep red, teal and gold. A howling wolf stands on each of the...

Kin rather than quarryAcross a great many Native American nations the wolf is not an animal you hunt. It is closer to a relative: a teacher, a guardian, sometimes a brother. The recognition was practical before it was spiritual. Peoples living by hunting, fishing and...

Red and yellow hearts sit where the eyes would be, flat against a grey face with a stitched brow arched above each. Below them the muzzle runs long and narrow to a wide black nose, and a small pink tongue shows at the side....
