Every line in this engraving is doing two jobs at once. The wolf's head and ruff are filled with long flowing strokes that follow the muscle underneath, while the full moon at the top right is given its own map of swirls and craters. A horizon, a band of cloud and a low ridge of hills close the scene, all held inside one square panel with softly rounded corners.
The moon is not really a creature of midnight. It keeps its own timetable, and a first quarter moon hangs in the afternoon sky while the sun is still well up. Wolves work to a similar rhythm. They are crepuscular, busiest through dusk and again at first light, rather than strictly nocturnal.
Which makes the pairing on this panel more honest than the old picture of a wolf baying at midnight. Both belong to the edges of the day, when the light is either going or coming back, and both are easiest to notice then.
It is photographed beside a stack of books. Find more in the wolf lamp collection and across the wolf decor range, or read about contemporary decoration and wolf decoration.
