Symmetry is the oldest device in ornament, and this face is built on it. Every scroll on the left has an answer on the right, from the flourishes filling the ears to the paired curls that run up the brow and meet in a leaf shape between the eyes.
Look for a moment and the ornament resolves into a wolf: pointed ears, a broad muzzle marked with whisker dots, an open mouth with the teeth stepped along the jaw. Look again and it reads as pure decoration, nearer to a woodcut or a tattoo flash sheet than to an animal study.
That double reading is what carries the piece once the base is lit. Engraved into clear acrylic and lit from below, the whole pattern comes up at once as a network of bright lines above a black oval base, with the cut edges of the sheet showing as two faint diagonals.
