Snorri Sturluson names the wolf that chases the moon. In the Prose Edda, Skoll follows the sun across the sky while Hati Hrodvitnisson runs out ahead of her and hunts the moon instead, and the two are still running when the world ends. It is one of the older reasons for putting a wolf and a moon in the same picture.
The disc is round and mirror bright, with a wolf's head thrown back mid howl. A crescent moon sits to the upper left, a scatter of dots fills the sky behind it, and short hatched strokes give the shoulders their fur and the ground its horizon. The drawing is held to fine dark line, which keeps it legible on a crowded ring. A jump ring joins the disc to a wide flat split ring.
Wild wolves do not fight their way to the top. A pack is usually a family, a breeding pair with their young of the last two or three years, and leadership arrives with parenthood rather than combat. The howl in the picture is working too. It carries for miles across open country and tells scattered pack members where the others are.
