Meteors fall behind the shoulder of this all over print, thin white streaks crossing a starfield that runs from the collar down to the hem. The wolf is grey and silver, head lowered and turned aside, with seams of turquoise light running through the ruff and the same colour lit in its eyes. A pale moon hangs high on the right, and a faint nebula glow lifts the black just enough to separate fur from sky.
The turquoise is the artist's addition, not the animal's own colouring. Real grey wolves carry black, brown, cream and silver in a coat of two layers, a dense underfur beneath longer guard hairs, and the pattern shifts with light and season. Setting a cold blue-green through all that grey is what pulls the animal forward out of the dark ground.
Wolves carry a glow of their own after dark. A reflective layer behind the retina, the tapetum lucidum, bounces light back through the eye a second time and gives the animal a second chance at the same faint light.
