Four hunters, two ways of living

Four faces sit inside one woven hoop on this throw: a lion, a grey wolf, a leopard and a tiger, each in its own quarter of the circle, with white and brown feathers, dark stone and strands of red beads hanging below. The hoop rests on a warm ochre ground that carries the rest of the blanket.

Two of those four spend their adult lives alone. Leopards and tigers hunt, hold ground and raise young without company. The lion and the wolf took the other road, and of the two it is the wolf whose household looks most like ours.

A family inside the circle

A wolf pack is usually one family: a breeding pair and the young they have raised across several winters. The parents lead because they are the parents, not because they won anything. Older brothers and sisters often stay a year or two longer, guarding the pups at the den and carrying food back while the adults are away hunting.
