Two wolves meet nose to nose at the centre of this design, one warm grey brown, the other silver and white, with a full moon rising directly behind them and small stars scattered across a deep cobalt sky. A ridge of snow covered peaks runs along the lower edge, lit blue and white.
Wolves in the far north face a winter that lasts most of the year and weeks of darkness around midwinter. Their ears and muzzles are shorter than those of southern wolves, giving the cold less surface to work on, and their coats thicken into two layers as the light goes. Prey is scarce that far up, so territories are vast and a pack may cross a great deal of country between meals.
Nearly the whole picture is built from two colours. The night sky and the shadows in the snow share one blue family, while the moon, the star specks and the lit faces of the peaks share one white. The wolves are the only warm thing in the frame, which is why the eye lands on them first.
