A black and white pup stands on wet ground looking straight out, and the reflection beneath it is not a pup at all but the grown wolf it will become. The old copy had this cub imagining its future, which is closer to the truth than it probably intended.
Growing up, for a wolf, means going. Somewhere between one and three years old most young wolves leave the family they were born into, not because they are driven out but because there is no room to breed at home.
What follows is the hardest thing a wolf ever does. Dispersers travel alone through territory that belongs to other packs, and the distances can be extraordinary: hundreds of kilometres is ordinary, and individuals have been tracked across thousands.
Those that survive it found families of their own. That is where every pack comes from.
The pup and its reflection carry the whole image and everything either side of them is open wet ground, worked in greys with almost no colour in it, so there is little fine detail to lose at the Small size.
See the painting size chart, and our wolf plush toy range if this is for a child's room.
