A howl carries further than a bark. Wolves use it to find one another across open country, to gather the pack before a move, and to tell a neighbouring pack where a border lies. Sound is the one thing an emblem cannot carry, so this buckle gives the posture instead: the wolf seated on a ridge of rock, chest lifted, head thrown back, muzzle to the sky.
The scene sits inside an oval and stands raised above a deep blue ground, so the figure reads first and the setting second. Clouds and curling foliage fill the space around the wolf in the same pale silver tone as the figure. Two feathers run down the outer edges, each hung from a small ringed medallion, and the rim is stepped and rounded like the boss of a shield.
Emblems like this work in three depths. The ground is lowest and darkest, the landscape occupies the middle, and the wolf is brought highest of all, which is why the eye lands on the raised head before anything else. At arm's length the whole thing still resolves as one animal against one sky.
The buckle stands alone as the single point of interest on a waist, with everything else left quiet. It sits with the wolf belt collection and the wider wolf clothes range. Why do wolves howl explains what the pose is for.
