A single wolf walks out of a bank of pale stones towards you, with a fallen bare tree lying behind it, flat water and a lit horizon beyond, rain falling in fine diagonals across the whole picture and a full moon low in the corner of a near black sky. It is drawn rather than photographed, in black, white and grey only.

Monochrome has no colour to clash with. It sits against grey, cream, navy, wood or brick without anyone having to plan around it, which is why designers reach for black and white when a scheme is not yet settled.

Why it suits a modern interior

Contemporary rooms run on restraint. A wolf rendered in warm realistic colour reads as rustic; the same animal in black and white reads as graphic, which is a different category entirely.

The lit water carries what light there is, and the dark sky gives the depth that stops a pale room reading as empty. Together they give the wild subject a treatment disciplined enough to sit in a room with nothing else going on.
