A blue moon is not blue

The phrase now means the second full moon in a single calendar month, which happens roughly every two and a half years.

That definition is an accident. The older meaning, from the Maine Farmers' Almanac, was the third full moon in a season containing four. A 1946 magazine article misread it, the mistake was repeated for decades, and the wrong version won.

So the common definition of a blue moon is itself a misunderstanding that stuck, which feels appropriate for an animal surrounded by them.

Blue as a decorating colour

The scene is a single wolf in black silhouette on a rocky rise, head back and muzzle up, howling towards a full moon that fills most of the sky behind it. A starfield sits above, cloud banks catch the light below, and a black tree line runs out across the outer panels to either side.

The palette is the practical argument. It is teal-blue, black and white and nothing else. Blue is the easiest strong colour to live with and the least likely to date, and it cools a room that runs warm.

It also sits with far more existing schemes than red or orange would, which makes this one of the more placeable bold pieces we carry.
