The beaded chain, or ball chain, is the one used for military identity tags, and it has been since the middle of the last century.
It was chosen for a grim but sensible reason: it is designed to come apart under load rather than hold. A chain that will not break is a hazard around machinery and around a neck. The beads pull free of the connectors and the chain simply opens.
That is worth knowing rather than being surprised by. If yours opens, it has done what it was built to do, and it clips back together.
A ball chain moves differently from a link chain. It is flexible in every direction, so it drapes rather than lying in a line, and it makes a faint sound when you move.
It also reads as utilitarian rather than decorative, which suits a carved, rugged pendant far better than a fine polished chain would.
Cut detail sits below the surface and is protected by the metal around it, so it stays sharp on a piece worn daily. An occasional wipe keeps the lines from filling with skin oil.
