The wolf itself is painted honestly: grey and warm brown fur, eyes shut, head tipped right back so the throat opens along one long line from chest to nose. Everything around it is watercolour. Teal washes down the left side, lime and yellow green flood the right, and out of the open muzzle rises a plume of crimson, coral and orange that spreads up over the hood.
That is a clever piece of portraiture. Wolves raise the head to howl because it sends the sound further, and a lifted throat hands the artist a clean diagonal with empty space above it. Filling that space with colour makes the thing you cannot see visible. The face stays calm and realistic while the paint does the shouting for it.
Splatter, speckle and thin drips carry on across the sleeves and back, so the whole garment reads as one painting rather than a picture pasted onto the front of a jumper.
More prints wait in the wolf clothes collection, and there is a proper explanation of the sound itself in why do wolves howl.
