Most people have never thought about it, and once you have you cannot stop noticing.
The moon is a sphere lit from one side by the sun. The crescent is simply the lit part, which means the horns always point away from the sun. They can tilt at any angle depending on time and season, but they can never point toward the light source.
Plenty of crescent jewellery gets this wrong, and plenty of crescent art puts a star inside the horns, which is impossible, since that region is the unlit moon itself and would block anything behind it.
None of that stops a design working. It is just quietly satisfying to know.
Five distinct models rather than one shape in five finishes, so it is worth looking through the whole set before deciding. They differ in how the wolf and the crescent are arranged, not just in colour.
The one shown here hangs a round glass cabochon in the open side of a filigree crescent: a black wolf on a rock, head thrown back and howling, against banked violet cloud and a pale sky behind it. The scrollwork in the crescent is pierced right through, so the metal reads as open against the solid dome it frames.
Our article on why wolves howl covers the moon connection. See wolf jewelry.
