The setting does most of the work. A dark animal against fresh snow and pale birch trunks has about as much tonal separation as a photograph can give you, so the outline stays clean and the coat keeps the brown lights running along the back and flank.
The wolf stands square in the snow with its head turned towards you, and that look back is what holds the composition together across the split panels.
A picture built on snow and winter light suits a wall that is already pale. The white ground reads as part of the room rather than as a hole punched in it.
It is also forgiving about lighting. The contrast is built into the image rather than borrowed from the lamp, so it still reads from the far side of a room and does not collapse in a dim corner.
