Contrast is what carries across a room

A cushion is looked at from three or four metres away far more often than from close up, and that changes which designs work.

At distance, fine detail disappears entirely and only the largest tonal differences survive. A subtle print with delicate shading turns into a vague patch; a bright disc against a dark ground stays exactly as legible as it was.

That is why the wolf-and-moon composition has outlasted every other treatment of the subject. It is built from one very light shape against one very dark one, which is the strongest arrangement available.

It also survives poor light

The same property helps in a badly lit room or in the evening, when colour perception drops and the eye is working mostly on brightness differences.

Low-contrast cushions effectively vanish after dark. This one does not.

On the moon

Wolves do not howl at it. They raise the muzzle to send sound outward rather than into the ground, and they howl at night because that is when they are active.
