Both eyes are pale blue and both are open. The one on the dark side hangs there on its own with nothing around it, which is what makes the face read as a face at all.
Recognition lives in what is left: the mass of the head, the set of the ears, the weight of the ruff where it meets the shoulder. Shapes drawn that large carry across open ground, the way a headland keeps its profile when strong light flattens everything else.
