A howl starts low, climbs, then settles into one long held note that can travel for miles across open country. The artwork catches the wolf at that exact moment, head tipped back, throat open, the animal drawn as a single rising line.
The whole thing is worked in dark navy on a pale ground. The wolf sits in profile with its muzzle to the sky, and the silhouette is filled with a second landscape of pine ridges, a river and mountains under stars. A compass rose lies across its chest, a crescent moon hangs above the peaks, and the round edge is finished with a white fringe.
Wolves howl to find one another again when a hunt has scattered them, and to tell the neighbours where a border lies. It is a way of staying together without having to walk.
Group howling is never sung in unison. A wolf joining a chorus already underway shifts its pitch away from the voices beside it, so the sound keeps sliding and refuses to land on one note.
