When one pack hears another, what follows is not simply noise. It is closer to two groups counting each other.
Researchers watching wolves in Yellowstone found that packs weigh up what they hear before deciding whether to approach or withdraw, and the number of voices matters. So does whether large males appear to be present. A smaller group hearing a larger one will often simply leave.
Most territorial conflict between packs is settled this way, at a distance, without anyone meeting. The howl does the work a fight would otherwise have to.
Wolves howling together deliberately avoid matching each other's pitch. A handful of animals sliding around one another's notes sounds like considerably more.
If your neighbours are deciding whether to take you on based on how many of you they can hear, sounding like a crowd is a sensible investment.
