A howl carries because of how it is aimed. The wolf lifts its muzzle, opens the throat and sends the note out above the ground, which is part of why the sound crosses open country so well. This print catches the animal mid note.
The scene runs the length of the sock. A grey and tawny wolf stands in snow with its head tipped right back, chest pale, ruff heavy across the shoulders. Behind it the sky moves from soft pink to cold blue over a low pale ridge, and an eagle with a white head and dark wings crosses the top of the panel with its wings spread.
A second wolf stands lower and to the right, darker through the face and shoulders, looking straight out while the first one calls. Snow lifts around its legs, and more tawny fur carries on past it to the edge of the print.
The whole scene repeats on the second foot, so the calling wolf and the watching one travel as a pair. Read why do wolves howl for what the call actually does.
