The hunt is mostly failure

The scene keeps the two sides apart: a stag with its head raised in the mist at one end, wolves working along a snow ridge at the other, one of them howling with its breath showing in the cold. Grey and white throughout, with the outer panels almost pure snow.

Wolves do not overpower prey. They test it: following a herd for hours, provoking movement, watching for the animal that is slow, sick or old. Estimates for large prey run at something like one success in ten attempts, and often worse.

That is why a wolf is built the way it is. Long legs, a narrow chest, a gait that can be held for hours. Endurance rather than power, and closer to a marathon runner than a heavyweight.

Predator and prey together

Deer are the main prey of wolves across most of their range, and the two species have shaped each other for a very long time. What wolves take is disproportionately the weak, which keeps a deer population healthier than an unhunted one.

Putting both animals in the same scene, split across a row of staggered panels that hang as one piece, is the honest version of a relationship usually shown from one side only.
