Most wolves leave home. The animal here is drawn from behind, tail low, feet on broken ground, walking out of the frame, with the words Lone Wolf lettered in capitals beside its head.
The phrase usually means someone who wants nothing to do with anyone. In the field it means close to the opposite. Most young wolves disperse from the pack they were born into, generally between one and three years old, and set off alone to find unclaimed ground and a mate. Some cover fifty kilometres, others more than a thousand. Nearly all of them are trying to start a family rather than avoid one.
A traveller like that howls sparingly. A call gives away exactly where you are, useful when you are looking for a mate and risky when you are crossing someone else's territory.
