The wolf is emerging from mist rather than standing sharp against a background, and that softness is the whole character of the piece.

It is a young wolf dispersing to find territory and a mate of its own, and the state is temporary and genuinely dangerous: dispersing wolves have markedly lower survival than those still with a family.

It is an image of setting out rather than standing apart, which is a better thing to hang on a wall.
