This is usually put down to quiet, and quiet is only part of it. The air itself behaves differently after dark.
During the day the ground is warm and the air above it is warmer than the air higher up. Sound bends toward cooler air, so it curves upward and away, and a shout is lost into the sky.
At night the ground cools first and the layer just above it becomes the coldest. The gradient reverses, and sound that would have escaped upward is bent back down toward the ground instead. It stays low and keeps travelling.
The same effect is why a distant train or a motorway can be startlingly loud on a cold clear night and inaudible at noon.
A wolf howling at dusk is exploiting genuine physics, whether or not it knows it. The night is not merely quieter; it is acoustically better built for carrying a voice.
A wolf, a full moon and forest, in a golden or silver tone.
Our article on why wolves howl covers the distances involved. See wolf pendant necklaces.
