Totem does not mean what it is usually used to mean

Wolf art leans on the word constantly, this shop included, so here is the distinction.

A totem in the traditions the word was borrowed from is an inherited kinship marker. You are born into a clan and the clan has its animal, in the way a family has a surname. It is not chosen, and it is not personal.

What most people mean by a spirit animal is something else: an individual affinity, picked rather than inherited. That is a perfectly reasonable thing to feel about wolves. It just is not what a totem is.

The older partnership

The picture catches the moment of contact. A heavy red-brown wolf sits in the grass with one front paw lifted into an open human hand, the sun going down behind snow-capped peaks, the whole scene carried across a stepped row of panels.

The relationship it draws on has a very long history behind it. Every domestic dog alive descends from ancient wolves, from an association that began at least fifteen thousand years ago, and human hunters on several continents watched wolves work and learned from the method.

Our article on the wolf as brother covers the specific traditions rather than the generic version.
