Okami is the Japanese word for wolf, and in the mountain shrines of Chichibu and Mitake the wolf was honoured rather than hunted. Farmers asked it to keep deer and boar out of the fields, and took paper charms bearing its image home to hang by the door.
This mask follows the festival habit of a white ground and red brushwork. Red flames curve back from the eye openings and across the brow, red fills the inside of the two tall ears, and a gold marking runs down the centre of the forehead to a point at the bridge of the nose.
The sculpt carries on past the eyes to a closed snout, so the muzzle narrows from the cheekbones to the nose the way a wolf's does, with a dark line for the mouth beneath.
Age category: adults. Practical and easy to wear. See how it sits beside the rest of the wolf mask range, or read about the wolf as a totem animal.
