Deliberately so. The real moon covers about half a degree of sky, roughly a pencil eraser held at arm's length, and it is the same size whether it looks huge on the horizon or small overhead.
Painting it larger is an old device. It gives the composition a bright disc to organise itself around and pushes the scene from observation into something closer to myth. Every artist who has ever drawn this subject has done it.
Knowing that makes the picture better rather than worse. It tells you what kind of image you are looking at.
Wolves are not strictly nocturnal. They are most active around dawn and dusk, and deep night is quieter than the folklore suggests.
Night imagery persists because that is when people historically heard them, not when wolves are busiest.
Three wolves on a black ridge, all of them in flat silhouette. One at the left has its head thrown back mid-howl. The other two are further along the ridge, one sitting with its ears up and one standing side-on, watching rather than joining in.
Behind them the moon is pitted and enormous and the rest of the sky is packed with stars. The whole thing is blue and black and nothing else, which is why it holds together across the panels.
A bright moon against dark ground reads well from a distance and in poor light, which makes this forgiving on an awkward wall.
