The composition that never fails

Wolf and full moon. It is on more bags, posters and tattoos than any other wolf design, and it has been for a century. This one takes the quiet version of it: the wolf lies along a rock at the water's edge, muzzle resting on its forepaws, eyes turned towards you, while the moon rises behind the mountains and sends its rays across the whole panel.

The reason the pairing works is geometry rather than nature. A bright disc behind a darker animal is one of the strongest arrangements available to any artist, which is why every culture with a sun or a moon in its art arrived at it independently.

It also happens to be the arrangement that survives being printed small. The moon and the shape of the resting wolf read from across a room, and the painted detail is there when you look closer.

The moon is not involved

Wolves do not howl at it. They raise the muzzle because that sends sound outward rather than into the ground, in the way a person cups their hands to shout across a valley.

They howl at night because they are active at night, and a full moon is simply the night people were outside to hear it.
