European tradition spent centuries casting the wolf as the thing you needed protecting from. Almost everywhere else it is the opposite: a guardian at the edge of the camp, a teacher, an animal that keeps watch and does not abandon its own.
This design belongs to the second tradition, which is the older and by some distance the more interesting one.
If a wolf stands for anything reliably, it is family rather than ferocity. A wild pack is a breeding pair and their young, every adult feeds the pups whether or not they are theirs, and the hardest stretch of a wolf's life is the period it spends alone.
Our article on what the wolf totem means goes into it.
Two wolves lie side by side on a rock, chins down and eyes half closed, tawny brown against grey. Above them the violet night sky carries the face of a third wolf drawn in the dark, looking out over the pair, with a crescent moon at one shoulder and a shooting star at the other.
The watching face is the idea of the piece in one image: the pack rests, and something keeps watch over it.
29 x 16 x 42 cm, Oxford fabric and black nylon, foam-lined back panel, air cushion shoulder straps, strong zips.
Water resistant rather than fully waterproof: the fabric sheds rain, and the zips and seams are not sealed.
Room inside for a laptop in a sleeve, a bottle, a notebook, lunch and a jacket. The foam back panel and padded straps are what make it comfortable loaded.
