Watercolour and pen work rarely share a surface, and here they share a wolf. The body dissolves into a wash of cobalt and deep blue, flecked with white like a sky seen through breaking cloud, while the head and ruff hold together in tight black linework. It is printed large across the front of a white tee, with a broad blue moon washing out behind the raised muzzle.
The mouth is open on a long call and the head is tilted back, which is how the sound gets its reach. Lifting the muzzle sends the note out level and clear of the ground, above the undergrowth and snow that would otherwise absorb it. Wolf howls sit low in pitch and fade slowly, and low sound bends around trunks and ridges rather than stopping at them.
On a cold, still night a single call can cross several miles of open country, and far less in dense forest. Every wolf has its own pitch, so a scattered pack can tell who is asking before deciding whether to reply.
