The pale fur and the blue eyes carry almost all the light in the image, and everything behind them, the pines and the sky, drops away into near black. That is what gives the composition its depth, and it is why the piece still reads clearly from the far side of a room.

Why it suits modern rooms

The palette is narrow: blue, white and near black, warmed only by the moon and by the ochre rock the small wolf stands on. A narrow palette is easy to place, because there is nothing in it to argue with a wall colour or a sofa.

It works best against a plain, light wall, which is what lets the contrast between the pale wolves and the dark ground do its work.
