Why almost all wolf imagery is winter

It is not a stylistic preference. Winter is when wolves can be seen.

Tracks hold in snow, a grey animal separates from a white field, and the trees are bare. Population surveys are flown in winter for exactly these reasons: from the air, over snow, a pack is countable in a way it simply is not in summer woodland.

So the snowbound wolf is not romanticism. It is the condition under which humans have historically managed to observe the animal at all.

Snow suits a panelled format

A white field crossing the gaps between panels reads as continuous far more easily than a detailed subject does. Splitting a face across a gap is jarring; splitting a snowfield is not.

This one puts two wolves in deep snow under bare trees, one at full stride and one down low in the snow beneath it, both grey and pale tan against the white. The running body crosses the panel gaps and the snowfield carries straight through them.

It makes this one of the more forgiving multi-panel pieces to hang.
