Alpha at least describes something real, badly. Beta describes nothing at all.
The whole ranking came from one study of unrelated wolves penned together in captivity in the 1940s. Strangers with nowhere to go produced exactly the ranked aggression you would expect, and researchers wrote down a hierarchy: alpha at the top, beta below, omega at the bottom.
Wild wolves do not do this. A pack is a family, the leaders are the parents, and there is no second in command any more than there is one in your own household. The middle ranks were an artefact of the enclosure.
The terms escaped into gym culture anyway and have been doing damage ever since, mostly to people rather than to wolves.
It is a product name rather than a claim, and the pendant is good regardless. But a piece of jewellery is a thing you explain to people occasionally, and this is a better answer than the one on the label.
A sculpted wolf head in stainless steel, facing straight forward with the ears up, the fur cut strand by strand across the brow and ruff and the recesses darkened so the muzzle and cheekbones stand out. Steel holds that modelling rather than letting it soften with wear.
Our article on what alpha actually means covers the study. See wolf pendant necklaces.
