A muzzle lifted to the sky, the throat pulled long, the chest turned upward: the wolf on the left of this canopy is caught mid howl, while a second stands to the right with its head level and its ears forward. Golden dust hangs in the air around them both.
A howl carries a remarkable distance over open ground, and wolves rarely hold the same note together. Each animal slides its pitch away from the others, which makes a small group sound like a far larger one to anything listening. There is more on that in why wolves howl.
The canopy is split by temperature. Warm amber below, where low light catches the dust and turns the whole ground gold. Cool blue above, where a ridge of spruce dissolves into fog, and higher again a moon behind thin cloud with stars showing through the dark. The eight panel seams run through the scene without breaking it up.
