Two wolves stand on a snowy ridge with their heads tipped back towards a full moon, and the whole scene is worked in relief into the cover of this bronze toned pocket watch.
The cover is pierced as well as sculpted, so the dial shows through the gaps between the two animals and behind the treeline. Raised fur runs along their flanks, the moon sits above them as a smooth disc, and the antique bronze finish is warm rather than brightly polished. The same tone carries across the case, the crown and the chain.
Behind the cover the dial is white, printed with black Arabic numerals for the twelve hours and a smaller outer ring that carries the figures from 13 to 24. A hinged bow at the crown holds the ring, and a link chain runs from there. It sits with the rest of our wolf watch pieces.
Howling keeps a pack in contact across distance, and people have been reading meaning into that sound for as long as they have lived near wolves. The engraving catches the pose everyone knows: muzzle lifted, chest open, the call going up and out. Our guide to why wolves howl covers what those calls are actually doing.
