Mist scatters light in every direction, which flattens distance and drains colour from whatever stands behind it. That is why the wolf in this photograph holds the eye: it is the one thing in the frame the fog has not softened.
The animal stands square among dark trunks and bare branches, coat bright against the grey. Its head is turned a little towards you, mouth open, ears up and forward. The ground is dark and sits low on the sock, while the fog lifts the middle of the print to a soft silver.
Colour is almost absent here. Charcoal, stone, a cold blue high in the branches, and the wolf itself somewhere between cream and pale grey. Against all that quiet, the animal carries the design on its own.
