Pale textiles carry light

This is the practical case for a pale cushion, and it is stronger than people expect.

A dark cushion absorbs light. A pale one reflects it, so in a north-facing room, a basement flat or anywhere short of daylight, a pale cover like this one, a misty winter scene in soft blue-grey with a white wolf standing across the middle of it, lifts the whole arrangement rather than deepening it. On a dark sofa the effect is immediate and costs less than anything else that would achieve it.

It is also the reason hotels and showrooms use pale textiles: they make a room read as larger and brighter than it is.

The animal earns the palette

Arctic wolves live where the temperature reaches sixty below, on territories that can run to thousands of square kilometres because prey is so thinly spread. The coat is not decorative; it is what makes that possible.

They are also one of very few wolf populations never collapsed by hunting, simply because almost nobody lives up there.
