The colour choice is doing everything here, and it is not arbitrary.

The picture is greyscale apart from the eyes, so red is the only colour anywhere in the frame. It is the reason warning signs, emergency equipment and stop lights use it, and why the eye finds it before it finds anything else in a room.

The dark wolf underneath

The coat is charcoal and silver and the background falls away to black at the edges of the panels, so nothing else in the composition asks for attention. The eyes are the only saturated point in the image and they carry the whole of it.

It is a simple idea executed cleanly, which is harder than it looks.
